Harvest Henderson (she/they)

About the Artist

Harvest is an artist, writer, maker, and mother who designs workshops and gatherings aimed at empowering creativity, building connection, and sparking new ways of seeing. She works in ceramics, weaving, installation, embroidery, mixed media, and pretty much anything involving hot glue. She has also taught creative writing. Harvest holds an MFA from Columbia University and has trained in TESOL and anti-oppression pedagogy. Over the past 15 years, she’s worked with students of many ages, abilities, and backgrounds in community studios, public schools, and universities. Her teaching style is down-to-earth and human-centered, focused on process and progress rather than perfection. When she’s not in her tiny home studio or a classroom, she loves road trips, speculative fiction, and vegetable gardening.

About THE ARTIST

Ceramics project

Students practice handbuilding techniques—slab, pinch, and coil—to create two to three functional or sculptural projects over the week, finishing with a day of color and surface design. Clay workshops adapt to most grade levels, and the tactile nature of clay engages kids of all ages—often especially those who struggle with other media. Projects may include slab mugs, gnome houses, animal pinch pots, dioramas, curio shelves, face jugs, lidded boxes, clocks, luminaries, superhero self-portraits, and more. Whenever possible, projects are rooted in cultural context and include fun facts about the origins and chemistry of clay. Step-by-step demos, a celebration of imaginative thinking, and encouraging hands-on guidance help every student finish with a one-of-a-kind ceramic artwork and a sense of accomplishment. Other workshops offered by this artist include weaving, batik fabric dye, linocut printing, zine making, collaborative installation, illustrative embroidery and sachiko (visible mending).

Weaving project

Students learn foundational weaving techniques while creating their own unique woven artwork inspired by the “no mistakes” Saori philosophy. Each participant builds a simple cardboard lap loom—so they’ll know how to easily make another at home—and weaves a colorful wall-hanging tapestry. (Workshops adapt to most ages; older students sometimes turn their pieces into bags or pouches.) Fresh materials and methods are introduced daily, from experimenting with roving wool for texture to tying Rya knots for a fringed border. Along the way, we explore weaving traditions from around the world, the beauty and importance of imperfection, and sustainable art-making through repurposed materials. Each student leaves with a vibrant, original textile piece and the know-how to keep weaving on their own. Other workshops offered by this artist include ceramics, batik fabric dye, linocut printing, zine making, collaborative installation, illustrative embroidery and sachiko (visible mending).
