With a Master's in Education, a former elementary school teacher, and 30 years experience working with children, Nicole has a deep-rooted passion for teaching hands-on art experiences that inspire curiosity, exploration and a connection to nature and science. Her hands-on art curriculum provides modeling and scaffolding, clear criteria and attainable expections. Each artist will feel supported and challenged as Nicole guides them to explore and realize their individual creativity and imagination, while building new skills and confidence as a young artist.

4 or 5 Day Residency, grades 3-5
Science and art come together as students learn the elements of design, patterns, color theory and watercolor techniques along with feather functions and beak adaptations, to create a fantastical 3-D paper bird sculpture with real painted feathers. Students will individualize their bird by learning about adaptations and different beak types, and choosing a beak type for their bird depending upon its diet. The end result of this project is a beautifully painted bird displayed in a piece of natural wood with uniquely painted feathers. This lesson offers great balance between direct instruction and students being given creative freedom and choice. Extension projects include creating mini bird clips or a painted bird in flight.

4 or 5 Day Residency, grades 2-5
Using natural wood and butterfly templates, students will design their own faux 3-D butterfly "taxidermy" display. With modeled lessons on design, patterns, color theory and watercolor techniques, students will create 3 unique butterflies and assemble them onto a piece of natural wood. In addition to creating this display, students will also create a unique moth wand that includes fine line design, watercolor and feather antenna on a wood dowel. This is a very fun residency with a nice combination of art and science, with lots of enthusiasm towards delving into the world of Lepidoptera, butterflies and moths. Extension projects include creating mini butterfly clips.
