Pamela is enchanted by the natural world and the ways in which the cultures and artistic practices of people are shaped by their sense of place. As a lifelong artist and teacher with over 30 years of experience, Pamela received a MA in Humanities from Wesleyan University with a focus on studio art and became certified to teach Art K-12 and English 9-12. She received her artistic training in France, China, and the US. Ten years ago she started the educational nonprofit Salmon Civilization which bring Tribal perspectives into the classroom. She is also trained in Expressive Nature-Based Art and Local Tribal History.
Whether through her Chinese Painting workshop or her projects on local Tribal History, Pamela encourages students to cultivate an understanding for other ways of looking at the world through hands-on art projects. She brings culture and creativity together with enthusiasm, with an emphasis on expression, tolerance and cultural understanding. Pamela encourages creative exploration, focusing on the artistic process, not the product.
Connect with like-minded learners from across the Pacific Northwest to exchange ideas, resources, and support our Arts in Education programs here in the Gorge.

This program introduces students to the skills and aesthetics of traditional Chinese Brush Painting within the context of Chinese Culture. Students learn how to work with the Chinese paint brush and Chinese inks, experimenting with stroke and tone to create Chinese inspired images of cats, birds, pandas, and blossoms. Students also learn Chinese characters for each subject and explore items from China.

This program allows students to learn about local Tribal history, culture, and current events through hands-on art making. Students are introduced to the local River Tribes; the Wasco, Warm Springs, Yakama, Umatilla, and Wyam. Students work with mixed media, sculpey clay, or watercolor to create villages, traditional fishing scenes, or a river full of fish. These programs can complement your social studies program.
